In this funny and heartwarming tale of true life, the parallel stories of troubled teen Shane and his mother Laura unfold within a family context that may be familiar to many– financial pressures demand that Laura find a way to contribute financially to support her family after years of being a part time worker and a full time wife and mother to three sons. Dusting off her singer-songwriter talent, Laura ventures forth, determined to make money in a way that allows her to reconnect with her creative passions. As Laura finds her way toward making her dreams come true, new life ripples throughout her family and Shane finds his own voice amid the many tumbling directions adolescence can take.
We are thrilled to have Kate Pitner, a fanciful and fabulous Los Angeles based Artist and Illustrator, creating the scrapbook papers and overlays that our character Lydia markets at her scrapbooking parties in the movie! (And for those of you who choose our popular “Magical Memories” reward, it’s Kate’s art that will grace your page.)
Kate’s artwork is licensed for use on many gift and home décor products. In addition to her licensing work, she has recently taken on the title of children’s book illustrator, and when she’s not busy working in her studio she is teaching art to elementary school students.
Kate can totally relate to the themes in our movie. Her job as an artist and a mom are what keep her world exciting (and never dull). Her studio is filled with knick-knacks to inspire and her collection of old children’s books. Pinned to the walls are many notes and pieces of art given to her by her art students and her two sons. In the corner of Kate’s office sits an ukulele that one day she will get back to playing, and on the floor lies a lazy old dog named Shamus O’Malley who sleeps more than he’s awake.
